Laayyoo is named after an indigenous tree in the Guji region of Ethiopia, which is cherished for providing shade to coffee plantations and enriching the soil with its nutrient-dense leaves. This coffee is a creation of Sookoo Coffee, led by Ture Waji, affectionately known as "The King of Guji." Ture’s deep connection to the land and its people drives his commitment to quality, traceability, and sustainability. Since founding Sookoo Coffee in 2018, he has built drying stations in Uraga and Shakiso, producing natural coffees with plans to expand into washed coffees. Ture's initiatives also include educating farmers, offering pre-harvest loans, and maintaining a 'woman-first' policy at washing stations.
Ture Waji’s passion for his community is evident in Sookoo Coffee’s broader impact. Beyond coffee production, Ture has focused on uplifting the local area by building a school for children and improving infrastructure. Sookoo Coffee’s dedication to sustainable practices ensures that each coffee lot is of the highest quality. The Laayyoo coffee, for example, is meticulously processed at the Haro Wachu station, ensuring only the best cherries are used. Ture's commitment to excellence and his innovative approach have made Sookoo Coffee a valued partner, with a shared vision for the future that includes producing washed coffees and exploring new regions in Guji.
Laayyoo Natural coffee is a testament to Sookoo Coffee's rigorous standards. Sourced from outgrower farmers in the Teraga area, this coffee consists of local varieties known for their productivity and disease resistance. The cherries are carefully sorted and dried on African beds under strict protocols to preserve their unique flavors. This meticulous process results in Laayyoo’s distinctive profile, characterized by a silky mouthfeel, vibrant acidity, and a fruity, juicy essence. The rich berry flavors, creamy sweetness, and delicate florals make Laayyoo a crown jewel of the Guji region, reflecting Ture Waji’s unwavering dedication to quality and his community.
